OK this my last yvnyl reblog for the day (i know i get carried away) but i completely agree with Mark on this and thank him for bringing it back one more time.
I think this record (my favorite of 2011) is finally nearing the end of it’s pop lifecycle, but one more post about it here is due. Upstart blog Deer Lodge just recorded this beautiful, stripped-down performance by Trevor Powers amongst the trees. Lovely stuff.
Not long ago I was cat-sitting for a good friend of mine, and the dance moves I was practicing to this song while alone in her house would probably have made a lot of people really uncomfortable. This song is bad as hell. Seriously.
Jenn Wasner (Flock of Dimes, and half of Wye Oak) wants to be a songwriter for others, and this is her song for Robyn. It’s really weird to hear her voice singing this kind of pop song after getting used to haunting songs like Wye Oak’s “Mary is Mary,” but that doesn’t make this song any less great.
This cover was the result of an evening where a friend of mine and I were slowing down songs we liked to see if it made them better. (It almost always does, for the record). This song, in particular, responded so well to that treatment that I decided to reproduce it myself, as faithfully as possible, and re-create the experience as a cover. I’m especially proud of this track because it marks the first time I’ve ever released something that I played, sung, produced and mixed on my own. I think my screwed-voice sounds a little bit like Usher, which is delightful. And, for the record, I’d be willing to say that this is “the only Eagles song I like”—but it’s a beast of a song, if you ask me.

Gabriel Berrios moved to Miami “for different reasons, one of the main ones for me was to find out what really was going on this huge city that no one seems to care to much about… Sometimes it seems to me that the thought of something is better than what it actually is. Like when you see a building under construction. The more that’s left to the imagination, the better. Its the same way with Miami—this stale, bright jewel, some sort of luxury, and a very valid connection to my hispanic roots—and so I made these few songs to really explore it.”
